VPN researcher

I’m Yelyzaveta, a Tech Writer at Cybernews specializing in cybersecurity software, with a particular focus on VPNs. I enjoy digging deep into how VPNs work, but my main goal here is simple: to explain how they can (or cannot) be useful to you.

I taught my dad how to torrent when I was 13, and he immediately returned the favor by introducing me to antivirus software. I haven’t browsed the internet without some form of protection since: VPNs, ad blockers, and a healthy suspicion of every download button. The more I explore these tools now, the more ways I find to use them: from securing my connection no matter where I work from to watching my sports team’s offseason friendlies on obscure streaming channels halfway around the world.

Over the last 2 years, in close collaboration with our in-house research team, I’ve reviewed dozens of VPNs using our detailed VPN testing methodology. This covers both mainstream providers like NordVPN and Proton VPN, as well as more niche picks like Mullvad. Whether it’s assessing apps' usability or testing obfuscation protocols, I get involved because I want every claim I make to be based on firsthand use.

I read the policies and third-party audit reports most users skip. I triple-check the numbers and cross-reference our findings with independent labs and researchers, so you wouldn’t have to fact-check me. And if I find something that doesn’t add up? I’ll say so.

My work at Cybernews spans reviews, comparisons, and guides tailored to specific use cases. Here are my recent favorites:
